My name is Joe Stearne, Former Sgt.E-5, served in 'Nam
in '63 with Sub unit 1 with Captain Rader as Marine CO. My tour of duty
in the Marines was from Feb. '61 to Mar '69 as a ditty chaser 2571 and
some DFing occasionally.
I was stationed at 1st Composite Radio Co. (as
it was known at the time) MCAS Kaneohe Hawaii from 1962 to 1965 with Major
Smith our Commanding Officer, Sgt. Major Tony Byars our senior enlisted
man (full blooded Native American Indian might I add).
About the Company Shield (to the left of me in the picture),
I did the
original design, while I was in Vietnam and had the first badges made in
the city of Hue. I still have two of the original badges complete with
the original misspelled "First" which was misspelled "Ficst". The story
behind the making of these badges is: when in VN we were attached to the
Army unit 3rd RRU and they had their shield and it said "Khong Bi'et"
which means " I don't know". Well it didn't take long before our little
Marine sub unit took exception to that and commissioned me to come up
with an alternative badge design to counter the Army's. What you see is
what I came up with. And I'm glad to see the spelling had been
corrected.
I cant tell you the pride I felt when I saw it again on another website. A
bodacious OOhraaa!
Now to more important things. How do I become a member of this website.
That is easy, just go to the home page, and on the right, click on the
Contact Us link.
Thank you for considering me and God bless our men and women in
Operation Iraqi Freedom.
